The Bulldog wrestling team traveled to Farmington Saturday for the annual Tiger Classic and brought home the championship for the first time ever. The Bulldogs proved their #2 ranking by defeating #1 ranked St Michael Albertville, the defending State Champs, in the finals by a score of 33-18. Paynesville also beat the #3 ranked Goodhue who is in class A by a score of 40-12. Before getting to the finals the Bulldogs wrestled Northfield, Bloomington Kennedy, and Rochester John Marshall.

Wrestling head coach Virg Vagle also won a title at the tournament. After the first win, he tied the state record for the most career wins and after the second win had the most career wins. By the end of the day, Vagle held the record by four wins.

The Bulldogs pulled out a victory over Northfield 29-19 by starting off fast and winning four out of the first five matches.

Paynesville's next match was Bloomington Kennedy. The final score was 52-4.

The Bulldogs now were in the championship pool and faced Goodhue in what was supposed to be a close match. The lower weights did an outstanding job giving the team the lead as Paynesville won the first seven matches. Lee Hiltner once again closed the match off with a win and the final score was 40-12.

The Bulldogs wrestled one more match before St Michael. They then faced Rochester John Marshall. The Bulldogs continued to wrestle well as they won by a score of 53-9.

In the most exciting and maybe their most unexpected win the Bulldogs beat St Michael for the championship in their last match of the day. Nothing bad could be said of the lower weights as they continued to give the Bulldogs leads of about 20 points.

Thanks to the fans who came in spite of the weather. We hope it was as exciting for them as it was for us. Paynesville's next match will be at home Jan. 10 against Litchfield. This is a conference match so we encourage fans to show up. Paynesville will be hosting its anuual invitational and will wrestle that Saturday at home.
