Stars take fourth place at holiday tournament | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The River Lakes Stars boys' hockey team placed fourth in a holiday tournament at Pine City and Moose Lake over the weekend, going 1-2. The Stars played their first two games on Friday and Saturday at Moose Lake, beating Barron, Wis., 15-0 in the first round but losing to Moose Lake in the second round, 7-5. In the third-place game on Monday in Pine City, the Stars lost 4-0 to their hosts from Pine City and took fourth place. Pine City outshot the Stars 30-18 and handed the team their fourth loss of the season. Sophomore center Jamie Paul (12) scored four goals over the weekend at the Pine city Tournament, including a hat trick on Friday. Senior goalie Blake Theisen made 26 saves for the Stars in goal against Pine City. Against Moose Lake, the Stars scored three goals in the second period to break a 2-2 tie. Senior center Mike Anderson and junior wing Andy Schramel combined for the three Stars' goals in the second period, with Anderson and Schramel scoring shorthanded and then Anderson scoring on the power play. The Stars led 5-3 with seven minutes to go, but Moose Lake scored four goals in the last seven minutes to win 7-5. Sophomore center Jamie Paul and junior wing Nick Dahlen also scored for the Stars in the first. The Stars dominated Barron, Wis., in a first-round game of the tournament, held in Moose Lake on Friday, barraging the opposing net with 49 shots and scoring 15 goals. The Stars scored four times in the first period, five more in the second, and six more in the third, winning 15-0. Anderson, Schramel, Paul, and ninth grade forward Alex Naujokas each recorded a hat trick for the Stars, scoring three goals apiece, accounting for 12 of the team's 15 goals. Senior center Chris Knauss, junior forward Nick Dahlen, and sophomore defenseman Mitch Willard also scored for the Stars. The Stars scored one power play goal - by Paul - and one shorthanded goal - an unassisted goal by Anderson. Their other 13 goals came at even strength. Paul and Naujokas each added two assists and finished with five points total. Schramel had four points, and Anderson, Dahlen, and junior defenseman Mike Mueller had three points. Mueller assisted on three goals. The Stars are 6-4 for the season.
