The Bulldogs boys' basketball team suffered their first loss of the season, falling to Kimball 57-53 on Monday, Dec. 22, in the first-round game at the Kimball tournament. The Bulldogs, who started their season with a four-game winning streak, had beaten Kimball 72-34 in their season opener earlier in December. In that game, the Dogs blitzed Kimball in the first quarter, outscoring the Cubs 26-8. This time, though, the Cubs held their own in the first half. In the second half, Kimball took the lead for good in the third quarter, playing to a 17-10 advantage in the third quarter and taking a 43-36 lead. The Dogs cut into that lead in the fourth quarter but were not able to catch the Cubs, who won 57-53. Paynesville made 20 field goals, one more than Kimball, shooting 36 percent from the floor. But Kimball made seven three-pointers, while Paynesville made only three. Kimball also outscored the Bulldogs at the free throw line by two points, with the Bulldogs shooting only 45 percent from the free-throw line. Senior Adam Kampsen led the Bulldogs by scoring 25 points, including making three treys. Kampsen has scored more than 20 points in the Dogs' last three games. Senior forward Adam Hemmesch also scored in double figures for the Bulldogs, netting 13 points. This week, the Bulldogs, now 4-1, played Lester Prairie on Monday in their second game in the Kimball tournament. Next week, the Dogs will host Benson on Monday, Jan. 5.
