Alex edges River Lakes, 4-3 | ||||||||||
Alexandria scored the winning goal with two minutes to play, defeating the River Lakes Stars girls' hockey team 4-3 at the Koronis Civic Arena in Paynesville on Tuesday, Dec. 21. Junior forward Sara Toft completed her hat trick for Alex with a goal with 2:14 to play, breaking a 3-3 tie. The game was tied at 1-1, 2-2, and 3-3 before Alex scored the winning goal. After a scoreless first period, junior Allie Stalboerger gave the Stars a 1-0 lead 19 seconds into the second period. Toft tied the game at 1-1 three minutes later, and Alex scored a power-play goal later in the second period to take a 2-1 lead. Junior Amber Schulzetenberge battles for the puck. Schulzetenberge scored a goal in the Stars' 4-3 loss to Alex last week. Junior Amber Schulzetenberge scored for the Stars early in the third period to tie the game at 2-2. Toft gave Alex a 3-2 lead with a power-play goal 80 seconds later. Junior Marie Omann scored for the Stars with 10 minutes to play, tying the score 3-3. The Stars (4-10) outshot Alex 42-33, but senior Ashley Wiesel stopped 39 shots in goal for the Cardinals. Sophomore Kacey Nyberg stopped 29 shots in goal for the Stars. The Stars had beaten Alexandria 5-2 in November. The Stars do not play this week. Next week, they will host Brainerd at the River Lakes Arena in Richmond on Tuesday, Jan. 4.
