Conference wrestling showdown postponed until January

By Michael Jacobson

The Bulldogs wrestling match at Minnewaska, scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 20, has been postponed, due to health reasons on the part of the Lakers.

The Dogs - rated #6 in Class A by the Guillotine - and the Lakers - who were rated #19 in Class AA - are both undefeated in the West Central Conference North so far. The Dogs are 2-0, having beaten Albany 49-19 and New London-Spicer 29-25, and the Lakers are 1-0, having beaten Sauk Centre 49-19.

Their conference showdown has been rescheduled for Friday, Jan. 20, at Minnewaska Area High School (between Glenwood and Starbuck). The junior varsity will start at 6 p.m. with the varsity following.

The Lakers won the WCC South title last year.

With their match against Minnewaska postponed, the Dogs finished their pre-Christmas slate with a record of 9-3.

Individually, the Dogs have five wrestlers rated in state. Senior Sean Glenz (12-0), a defending state champion, is rated first at 152 in Class A, and senior Joel Kerzman (10-0), a state runner-up last year, is rated first at 145. Glenz now has 163 career wins and needs 15 more to tie the school record. Kerzman also needs 15 wins to reach the 100 mark.

Senior Keith Klein (11-1), a state entrant last year, is rated fifth at 140. Sophomore Jordan Christian (4-0), a state entrant last year, is rated fifth at 103. And senior Joe Sheridan (10-2), a two-time state entrant, is rated sixth at 112.

Other varsity wrestlers with winning individual records so far this season are: ninth grader Jon Kerzman (9-3); junior Aaron Burris (7-2); sophomore Kevin Klein (6-5); senior A.J. Christian (6-6); sophomore Ryan Gale (4-2); senior Aaron Bachman (4-3); and sophomore Jordan Spaeth (2-1).

Though the Dogs do not wrestle again until January, they will begin their post-Christmas slate with a home match next week against Melrose on Thursday, Jan. 5. The junior varsity starts at 6 p.m. with the varsity following. This will be parent's night for the Dogs.
