Stars hosting tourney in Paynesville this week | ||||||||||||||||||||
Senior goalie Eric Prowker made 39 saves, allowing only four power-play goals, as the River Lakes Stars boys' hockey team lost a close game to Alexandria 4-2 on Thursday at the Koronis Civic Arena in Paynesville. The Cardinals outshot the Stars 43-26 and controlled play for much of the game, but the Stars scored early in the third period to get within two, at 4-2, but could not score again. Senior goalie Eric Prowker - getting help from senior defenseman Zach Johnson in the crease - made 39 saves on Thursday as the Stars lost to Alexandria 4-2 at the Koronis Civic Arena in Paynesville. Prowker made 39 saves in nets for the Stars. Senior forward Kurt Peterson scored a power-play goal, knocking home a rebound of senior Zach Johnson's shot from the point, to bring the Stars within 4-2 less than 90 seconds into the third period. Alexandria ended the game on a power play, which prevented the Stars from pulling Prowker for an additional skater. Senior forward Luke Harren scored less than a minute into the game to give the Stars an early 1-0 lead. But Alexandria rallied with two power-play goals in the first period to take a 2-1 lead. Sophomore forward Brett Savelkoul (2) holds off an Alexandria player so ninth grade teammate Adam Porwoll (13) can retrieve the puck from the offensive corner for the River Lakes Stars on Thursday night. In the second period, Alexandria scored their third goal after pulling their goalie for an extra skater during a delayed penalty on the Stars. Then they added another power-play goal with two minutes to go in the second period. The Stars (1-8) drew a penalty with one second left in the second period and capitalized on that power play in the third period, making the final score 4-2. This week, the Stars will host a round-robin tournament - the River Lakes Invite - on Tuesday, Dec. 27, Wednesday, Dec. 28, and Thursday, Dec. 29, at the Koronis Civic Arena in Paynesville. On Tuesday, Willmar plays Prairie Centre at 6 p.m., and the Stars play Redwood Valley at 8 p.m. On Wednesday, Redwood Valley plays Willmar at 6 p.m., and the Stars play Prairie Centre on 8 p.m. And on Thursday, Prairie Centre plays Redwood Valley at 6 p.m., and the Stars play Willmar at 8 p.m. Senior center Jamie Paul avoids an Alexandria defenseman by turning towards the boards last week in the Stars' 4-2 loss to the Cardinals. The River Lakes junior varsity will play Prairie Centre on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. and will play Willmar on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. These games will be played at the River Lakes Arena in Richmond.
