Stars shut out Flyers, 3-0 | ||||||||||
The River Lakes Stars varsity girls' hockey team beat Little Falls 3-0 for their second win of the season on Tuesday, Dec. 18, at the River Lakes Arena in Richmond. The Stars started slowly in the first period, not skating hard and not winning the races to the puck. They also did not have good control of the puck. Still, they almost scored in the first period when junior Marena Lewis and senior Jenny Habben combined to slap the puck in, but the refs ruled that the Flyers goalie stopped the puck on the goal line. The Stars outshot Little Falls 14-4 in the first period. After seniors Laurie Barten and Karen Hafner fought for possession of the puck in the River Lakes' offensive zone, senior Julia Mehr picked up the puck in front of the Flyer goal and scored unassisted in the second period to give the Stars a 1-0 lead. The Stars outshot the Flyers again in the second period, 11-8. In the third period, the Stars picked up their game. Hafner passed to Habben in the Stars' offensive zone, but Habben's shot on net was deflected by the goalie to eighth grader Amber Schultzen-berg, who put the rebound in and gave the Stars' a two-goal lead. Schutlzenberg scored again within a minute on another rebound goal. Habben received a pass, skated down the ice and shoy on net. The puck hit the pipe and bounced to Schultzenberg who made the score 3-0. The Stars play in a holiday tournament in the Twin Cities this week. They played Bloomington Kennedy on Wednesday, Dec. 26, at the National Sports Center in Blaine. They will play St. Francis on Thursday, Dec. 27, at noon at the NCS in Blaine. And they will play Columbia Heights at 6:15 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 28, at the Columbia Arena in Fridley.
