Bulldog boys beat Irish, 69-55 | ||||||||||||
The Bulldogs picked up their first home win of the season against the Maple Lake Irish on Tuesday, Dec. 18. The Dogs broke open a tough game with a 17-7 advantage in the third quarter to come up on top. It was the team's second victory of the season. Senior Wes Lieser releases a shot over a Maple Lake defender. Lieser led the Bulldogs with 21 points, nine rebounds, and six assists. In the first half the Bulldogs made numerous runs, but Maple Lake was able to capitalize on the Dogs' mistakes to hang in the game. The Bullldogs went into the halftime up by three, 33-30. In the third quarter, Paynesville built a double-digit lead by outscoring the Irish by ten. Down the stretch the Bulldogs shot well from the line to put the Irish away. The Bulldogs won by 14. Seniors Wes Lieser and Danny Savage combined to make ten free throws in the fourth quarter for the Dogs, who shot nearly 50 percent from the field and over 80 percent from the line. Lieser had his best game of the year so far, scoring 21 points with nine rebounds and six assists. Savage added 15 points for the Dogs as well as four assists. The Bulldogs are now 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the conference. The Bulldogs will play in the Minnewaska Holiday Tournament on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 27 and 28. Paynesville plays Alexandria at 6:30 p.m. on Friday in the first round. The consolation final will be at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday and the championship final will be at 8 p.m. The B-squad games start at 5 p.m. both nights.
