Boys win twice, remain undefeated | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
The Bulldogs boys' basketball team continued their impressive start, beating Sauk Centre 60-55 on Tuesday, Dec. 16, and beating BBE 67-62 on Thursday, Dec. 18, to run their season-starting winning streak to four games. The Bulldogs built a ten-point lead in the second half and then withstood a late Sauk Centre rally to win their second conference game of the season. At 2-0 in the WCC North, the Bulldogs have already matched their conference win total from last year. Senior Doug Mages made this layup with 15 seconds left then added two free throws with six seconds to play to seal the Bulldogs' victory against Sauk Centre last week. Mages had 14 points and 10 rebounds. The Bulldogs led 45-35 with a couple minutes to play in the third quarter, but the Mainstreeters went on a 10-0 run over the next four minutes, knotting the score at 45-45 with just under six minutes to play. The Bulldogs retook the lead on a bucket by senior Jordan Haag, who grabbed an offensive rebound and scored a layup. The Bulldogs scored two straight layups to retake a six-point lead. Sauk Centre hit a three-pointer, but senior Adam Kampsen - who led the Dogs with 22 points - answered with a three-pointer of his own. Then ninth grader Cory Nietfeld hit two free throws to give the Dogs an eight-point lead. But the Dogs missed the front ends of two 1-and-1 free throw opportunities, and Sauk Centre scored two baskets to get within four points again. They had two shots to cut the lead further within the last 30 seconds, but Nietfeld got a rebound and hit senior Doug Mages, streaking to the basket, for a fastbreak layup with 15 seconds left. Senior Adam Kampsen - looking to pass against Sauk Centre on Tuesday, Dec. 16 - scored 45 points in the Dogs' two wins last week. Sauk Centre hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to three again with six seconds remaining, but the Dogs were able to imbound the ball and Mages made two free throws to seal the victory. Kampsen had 22 points, including two three-pointers, and 12 rebounds to lead the Dogs. Mages added 14 points, and Haag had a double-double with 13 points and 10 boards. Nietfeld added eight points and ten rebounds. This week, the Bulldogs played at Kimball in the first game of their Christmas tournament on Monday. Next week, the Bulldogs will play their second tournament game against Lester Prairie on Monday, Dec. 29.
