In a 45-12 triumph over Annandale-Maple Lake, the Bulldogs won eight of 11 matches, with two double forfeits. Paynesville wrestlers won nine matches in beating Alexandria 48-17.
Paynesville overcame a 6-0 deficit against AML with three pins and a major decision in the lower weights. Nathan Glenz's pin at 112 came as he trailed 2-0 in the second period, Brad Schultz needed just more than a minute for his at 130, and David Kerzman built a 22-11 lead at 135, including eight first-period takedowns, before pinning his opponent in the second period.
Jeremy Sogge got four points for Paynesville at 119 by winning 18-9.
AML won two close decisions at 140 and 145, with Paynesville's Jim Mehr losing in overtime and Max Meagher being edged by a point.
With AML pulling within ten points at 22-12, the Bulldogs' lower weights sealed the match. Josh Schreifels won by technical fall at 152. He used takedowns and near falls to win 15-0. He scored five points in each period.
Pat Rohe won by forfeit at 160, and seniors Scott Braun and Shaun Fleischhacker recorded falls at 171 and 189 respectively. Braun led 5-1 after the first period in his match, which was the only scoring until Braun ended the match in the third period with a pin. Fleischhacker's pin was in the first period.
Against Alexandria, the Bulldogs jumped to an 18-0 lead thanks to pins by Adam Christian, Glenz, and Sogge at the top three weights.
After Alexandria got on the scoreboard with a pin of its own, the Bulldogs won three straight matches again. Schultz (130) and Mehr (135) both won decisions. At 140, Chris Welle had built a 22-7 lead, enough for a technical fall, before pinning his opponent 35 seconds into the second period. Welle scored 20 points in the first period of his match on eight takedowns and two near falls.
The Bulldogs got three more pins from their lower weights. Joe Hiltner got his pin with one second left of the second period at 152, Fleischhacker (189) got his sixth pin in six matches this year, and heavyweight Matt Brauchler recorded a first-period pin to make the final score 48-17.
"I'm real pleased with our upper weights," said coach Virg Vagle, who noted that Braun, Fleischhacker, and Brauchler had really stepped up early in the season, especially with some wrestlers battling injuries.
Becker also went undefeated at the quadrangular, whose match pairings were scheduled ahead of time.
The Bulldogs, who were 6-0 at press time, wrestled at state-ranked Litchfield last night in an important conference match.
