River Lakes Stars beat Willmar 4-1 | ||||||||||||||||||||
The River Lakes Stars girls' hockey team defeated Willmar 4-1 on Saturday at the Koronis Civic Arena in Paynesville. This game had been rescheduled from earlier in December. The Stars (4-9) scored two goals in the second period and two more in the third period, while allowing only a single second-period score. Ninth grader Kenzie Novak scored the Stars' first goal with six minutes to play in the second period, but Willmar tied the game 1-1 just over a minute later. Ninth grader Abbie Rhoda scored with just over a minute left in the second period to give the Stars the lead again 2-1. Ninth grader Kenzie Novak had a goal and two assists as the River Lakes Stars beat Willmar 4-1 Saturday. Seventh grader Jenn Paul scored a power-play goal early in the third period, and junior Allie Stalboerger scored midway through the final period to make the final 4-1. Novak led the Stars with three points (a goal and two assists). Paul and Rhoda each added a goal and an assist, and senior Janile Lewis had two assists. Sophomore Kacey Nyberg stopped 30 shots in net for the Stars, who outshot Willmar 34-31. This week, the Stars played Alex on Tuesday in Paynesville. They do not play again until January.

Sartell/Sauk Rapids got two goals in the first period to take a 2-0 lead. Junior Amber Schulzetenberge scored a power-play goal 90 seconds into the second period for the Stars to cut the lead to 2-1. After Sartell/ Sauk Rapids scored again, seventh grader Jenn Paul scored an even-strength goal with just under ten minutes to play in the second period to bring the Stars within one again, at 3-2. The two teams played scoreless hockey for the next 25 minutes, with Sartell/Sauk Rapids finally scoring an empty-net goal with 30 seconds to play. Junior Allie Stalboerger scored for the Stars ten seconds later, making the final 4-3. The Stars actually outshot Sartell/Sauk Rapids 32-19.
