Dogs lose close game to Irish | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
A second-half rally by the Bulldogs girls' basketball team fell short against Maple Lake on Saturday, as the Dogs lost 54-52 and took fourth place at the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted Holiday Tournament. The Dogs fell 10 points behind the Irish in the first half (32-22) but outscored Maple Lake by eight points in the second half (30-22). Senior center Kristin Lang led the Dogs with 14 points, while junior guard Laura Schaefer added 10 points. Lang also contributed seven rebounds, while Schaefer led the Dogs with three assists and three steals. In their first-round tournament game against host Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted on Friday night, the Dogs fell behind by 10 points in the first half (35-25), which HL-W-W increased by 11 points in the second half, winning 60-39. Lang and Schaefer again led the Dogs with nine points apiece. This week, the Dogs (1-6) will play at Minnewaska on Thursday in their last game before the Christmas break.

The Dogs made only five field goals in the first half, scoring 10 points. Meanwhile, junior center Renae Henjum of NL-S scored 20 of her 30 points in the first half. Henjum, who went 10 for 10 at the free-throw line, and the other NL-S players, who earned 32 shots from the charity stripe, caused foul trouble for the Bulldogs' posts. Senior Jacque Schlangen fouled out, and senior Kristin Lang and sophomore JessiccaLee Klein both had four fouls. The Dogs fared better in the second half, scoring 27 points and being outscored by the Cats by three points. Lang led the Dogs with 14 points, all in the second half.
