Dogs edge Melrose in hoops 58-57 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
The Bulldogs girls' basketball team withstood a fierce rally by Melrose to record their second conference win, beating the Dutchmen on the road 58-57 behind senior Amanda Glenz's 33 points. The Bulldogs built a 44-35 lead through three quarters in Melrose on Thursday, but the Dutchmen scored 22 points in the fourth quarter, and the Bulldogs pulled out a one-point victory. Glenz and junior guard Kim Hess each scored seven points in the fourth quarter for the Bulldogs, though Glenz fouled out with a couple minutes to play. Junior post Sam Moser took a charge to erase a Melrose basket, and Hess hit two free throws to seal the victory for the Dogs. Glenz made 15 of 21 shots from the floor and made three of three free throws to tally 33 points. She scored nine points in the first, eight in the second, nine in the third, and seven in the fourth quarter. She also had 11 rebounds. Hess added 15 points, eight assists, and four steals. The Bulldogs are now 4-1 for the season, including 2-0 in the West Central Conference North. This week, the Bulldogs will play in a holiday tournament in Maple Lake. The Dogs will start against Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted on Thursday with the varsity and C-squad playing at 6 p.m. and the junior varsity playing at 7:30 p.m. On Friday, the Bulldogs will play either Maple Lake or Watertown-Mayer, at 6 p.m. if they lose on Thursday and at 7:30 p.m. if they win on Thursday.

The Bulldogs built a 20-11 lead in the first half and then outscored the Jaguars 14-2 in the third quarter. They held BBE to 10 field goals and one free throw. Senior post Amanda Glenz led the Bulldogs with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Eight players scored for the Bulldogs. Juniors Kendra Johnson and Brittany Lieser were next on the team with six points each. Lieser had seven rebounds, and Johnson had four steals. Junior Kim Hess scored five points, dished out four assists, and had eight steals. Junior post Rachael Wendlandt had four points, six rebounds, and two blocks.
