Melrose, Albany best Dogs in conference games | ||||||||||||||||
The Melrose Dutchmen outscored the Paynesville Bulldogs girls' basketball team 39-22 in the second half on Friday night, winning a West Central Conference North game 57-40. The Dogs and the Dutchmen were knotted at 18-18 at the half, but Melrose netted 39 points in the second frame, led by junior guard Erica Feldewerd, who scored 19 of her 22 points in the second half. Senior post Jacque Schlangen led the Dogs with 12 points and nine rebounds, including eight points in the second half. Junior guard Brittni Schmitz added eight points, including six in the second half. The Dogs made nine field goals in the first half, with seven players scoring for Paynesville. In the second half, however, the Dogs netted only six field goals, with only five players reaching the scoring column for Paynesville. The Dogs (0-2 in the WCC North and 1-3 overall) traveled to New London-Spicer on Tuesday for another conference game. On Thursday and Friday, the Dogs will play in their holiday tournament at Howard Lake. On Thursday, the Dogs will play the host Lakers with the junior varsity playing at 6 p.m. and the varsity at 7:30 p.m. On Friday, the third-place games (both varsity and junior varsity) will start at 6 p.m. with the championship games following around 7:30 p.m. Other teams in the tournament are Maple Lake and Watertown-Mayer.

The Huskies built a 60-13 lead in the first half and outscored the Dogs 42-15 in the second half. Junior forward Sam Larsen (26 points) and junior guard Jennie Noreen (25 points) led the Huskies, the defending conference champs. Senior post Jacque Schlangen led the Dogs with eight points, while senior post Kristin Lang added six. The Dogs committed 46 turnovers in the game. "It's definitely a game you have to forget about and move on," said coach Jackie Parsley.
