Apollo topples Stars in conference opener | ||||||||||||||||||||
St. Cloud Apollo scored two goals late in the second period and another in the first minute of the third period and beat the River Lakes Stars boys' hockey team 4-2 on Tuesday, Dec. 5, in Richmond. After nearly 30 minutes of scoreless skating, St. Cloud Apollo took a 1-0 lead with five minutes to play in the second period. They added a goal in the last minute of the second period and a third in the first minute of the third period, building a 3-0 lead. Senior center Alex Naujokas scored two goals for the Stars in a three-minute span of the third period, trimming Apollo's lead to one goal, 3-2, with 11 minutes to play. The Stars, however, could not net the tying goal, and the Eagles added an empty-net goal with a second to play to make the final score 4-2. Senior goalie Brian Skluzacek made 43 saves for the Stars in goal. River Lakes was outshot 47-38 in their first conference game. This week, the Stars (1-3) traveled to St. Cloud Cathedral on Tuesday for a nonconference game. The Stars will host Sartell in a Central Lakes Conference game on Thursday at the River Lakes Arena in Richmond. Next week, the Stars will travel to Fergus Falls for a conference game on Tuesday, Dec. 19.

Benson/Morris took a 3-2 lead two and a half minutes into the final period and added another goal 16 seconds later. Their final tally came with seven minutes to play. Senior center Josh Engquist gave the Stars a 1-0 lead by scoring in the first minute of the game. Sophomore Peter Lindblad, who assisted on all three third-period goals, scored a goal later in the first period and a goal seven minutes into the second period to give Benson/Morris a 2-1 lead. Senior center Alex Naujokas tied the score at 2-2 just over a minute later, with an assist from Engquist. Senior goalie Brian Skluzacek made 47 saves for the Stars, who were outshot 52-28.
