Bulldogs get first hoops win | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
The Bulldogs beat the Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa Jaguars by 30 points for their first victory of the season on Monday, Dec. 3. The Dogs had lost two in a row, and were ready for a win, which they got at home, 72-42. Both teams started out even, exchanging baskets during each possession. A three-point shot put the Dogs up by three at the end of the first quarter, 14-11. The Dogs started the second quarter out with full-court pressure, and held the Jaguars to nine points while scoring 15, extending their lead. The Dogs' full-court pressure and depth wore out the Jaguars in the third quarter. Paynesville used fresh bodies to outscore the Jaguars by 15 in the third quarter, 22-7. In the fourth quarter, the Dogs let up on defense a bit, giving up 15 points, but once again ran good offense and scored 21 points. ÒI think we really played well as a team. We are just like a truck, hard to get started, but once we get going we are ready to go for the whole game,Ó said junior Danny Lieser. All 12 players on the Bulldogs' roster scored at least two points. Senior Stacy Lieser led the team by netting 17 points, and senior Heidi Jansen added 12. As a team, the Bulldogs had 34 rebounds and 18 steals. Junior Hannah Braun led the team with six rebounds and also had five steals. Junior Rachel Sogge led the team with two blocks. The Bulldogs hosted Annandale on Tuesday. They will host Melrose on Thursday night, with B- and C-squads starting at 6:15 p.m. and the varsity following around 7:30 p.m. On Tuesday, Dec. 18, the Bulldogs will travel to Litchfield.

The Dogs trailed by five at the end of the first quarter, despite all the fouls they committed. The Dogs were caught on their heels and were called for many reaching fouls. The Dogs allowed the Thunder to run a little bit in the second quarter, allowing them to score some unanswered baskets. The Thunder also broke the Dogs' full-court press, which led to some easy points. The Thunder led 37-23 at the half. Better defense in the third quarter slowed down the Thunder, with the Dogs only allowing 12 points, but they did not cut into the deficit as they only scored nine. The fourth quarter was the best for the Dogs, as they outscored LPGE 16-14, but it wasn't enough. Paynesville shot 65 percent from the line, making 13 of the 20 free throws. But the Bulldogs shot only 28 percent from the field. Stacy Lieser led the team with 10 points. Jansen and Mindy Meagher added nine each. Jansen also led the team with nine rebounds. Lieser led the team with four assists, and Meagher added three. Meagher also led the team with four steals.
