Icebreakers, Willmar top River Lakes | ||||||||||||||||||||
The River Lakes Stars had a rough game on Tuesday, Dec. 3, against the St. Cloud Icebreakers,losing 9-1. Marie Omann, a ninth grader from Rocori, scored both of the Stars' goals last week. With 10 shots on goal for the Stars and 37 shots for the Icebreakers, the Icebreakers had the game, played in St. Cloud, well in hand. They scored five goals in the first period, and two in both the second and the third periods. Sophomore Caryn Quist scored three goals and assisted on two more for the Icebreakers. Marie Omann, a ninth grader from Rocori, scored the only goal for the Stars in the second period. On Thursday, Dec. 5, the Stars hosted the Willmar Cardinals at the Koronis Civic Arena in Paynesville. Despite their hard work and effort, the Stars lost 3-1. After a scoreless first period, Willmar scored twice in the second. They added another goal in the third period before Omann scored the Stars' lone goal again. Willmar outshot the Stars 44-8, with junior goalie Trisha Wendlandt making 41 saves for the Stars. "It is encouraging for the girls to realize that they can skate with the best of the best, to hold a team of Willmar's caliber to a 3-1 score just goes to show our hard work and practice is paying off," commented assistant coach Stacy Emerson. "The girls are looking forward to playing then again." The Stars played at Sartell on Tuesday, Dec. 10. They will host Benson at the Koronis Civic Arena on Friday, Dec. 13, at 7 p.m. They will also host Alexandria at the Koronis Civic Arena on Tuesday, Dec. 17, at 7:30 p.m.
