Stars win hockey opener 6-3 | ||||||||||||||||||||
The River Lakes Stars boys' hockey team scored four goals in the third period to break a 2-2 tie and beat Becker/Big Lake 6-3 on Tuesday, Dec. 3, in their season opener. The Stars took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a goal by sophomore Andy Schramel. Becker-Big Lake took a 2-1 lead in the second period before sophomore James Herburg tied the score at 2-2 going into the third period. Midway through the final period, the Stars scored three goals in just over three minutes. Junior Mike Anderson scored first and then assisted on another goal by Schramel. Sophomore Ryan Weber and senior Kyle Curran added goals for the Stars. Schramel had two goals and an assist for the Stars. Anderson had a goal and two assists, and Curran had a goal and an assist. The Stars outshot Becker-Big Lake 31-19. The Stars played St. Michael-Albertville on Tuesday. They will host Monticello at the River Lakes Arena in Richmond on Friday at 7:30 p.m. They will play at Alexandria on Tuesday, Dec. 17, at 7:30 p.m.

Senior Kyle Curran opened the scoring midway through the first period and then assisted on a goal by sophomore Ryan Weber, as the Stars led 2-0 after the first period despite being outshot 10-5. Both Curran and Weber had a goal and an assist for the Stars, and sophomore Nick Dahlen added two assists. After a scoreless second period, Sartell rallied with five goals in the third. Sartell outshot the Stars 31-13. Junior goalie Blake Theisen made 26 saves for the Stars, who dropped to 1-1 with the loss.
