The Bulldogs gymnastics team defeated St. James in their season opener on Friday by four points. Ninth grader Kacy Nehowig took first place on three events and the all-around competition, and the Bulldogs outscored St. James on every apparatus. The visiting Bulldogs scored 113.5, beating St. James, which scored 109.5. "I was hoping for 110 for our first meet, hitting 113 was great," said coach Deb Nehowig. "The girls performed well." Kacy Nehowig placed first on the vault (8.9), on the uneven bars (8.05), and on the floor exercise (7.85). She was second on the balance beam (7.2) and first in the all around. Seventh grader Anna Kotten placed third on the uneven bars (7.45) and fourth on both the balance beam (6.55) and the floor exercise (7.25). She was third in the all-around competition. Coach Nehowig was pleased that Kotten scored 28.65 in the all around in her first varsity meet and predicted that Kotten would top 30 by Christmas. The Bulldogs' best apparatus was the vault, where they scored 31.5. Junior Ashley Spanier also placed fourth on the vault for the Bulldogs, scoring 7.7. The Bulldogs beat St. James most decisively on the floor exercise and the balance beam. On the floor, the Bulldogs won by 1.5 points and on the beam by 1.35 points. Sophomore Kayla Nelson placed third in both events for the Bulldogs. On the bars, ninth grader Celia Frieler made her kips for the first time but did not place in the top five.
