Seven-goal outburst lifts Stars over Litch | ||||||||||
A seven-goal third-period flurry lifted the River Lakes Stars girls' hockey team to a 9-1 victory over Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato on Thursday night at the Koronis Civic Arena in Paynesville. The Stars led 2-1 entering the final period but tallied seven goals in the final 17 minutes of play. In the third period, the Stars outshot Litch/DC 17-3 and got goals from seven different players. Junior Allie Stalboerger started the outburst by scoring 20 seconds into the final period. Other goal scorers for the Stars in the third period were junior Marie Omann, ninth grader Kenzie Novak, sophomore Tori Aretz, ninth grader Abbie Rhoda, junior Amber Schul-zetenberge, and sophomore Shannon Smith. Schulzetenberge completed her hat trick with her third unassisted goal with four and a half minutes to play. She had given the Stars a 1-0 lead in the first period, breaking a scoreless tie with three minutes to play in the period. Then she scored late in the second period to increase the Stars' lead to 2-0. Litch/DC got their only goal in the final minute of the second period, cutting the Stars' lead to 2-1, but the Stars (3-6) dominated the final period to win their third game of the season, breaking a five-game losing streak. This week, the Stars played at St. Cloud Apollo on Tuesday. They will host Willmar at the Koronis Civic Arena in Paynesville Township on Thursday. Next week, they will play at Sartell on Tuesday, Dec. 14.
