Sauk Centre tips Dogs in overtime, 65-58 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The Bulldogs girls' basketball team used a fourth-quarter rally to force overtime at Sauk Centre on Friday night, but the Mainstreeters prevailed in overtime, handing the Dogs their first conference loss. The Dogs (1-2) trailed by six entering the final quarter but outscored Sauk 16-10 in the final eight minutes. The Dogs had a chance to win in regulation but missed a free throw with five seconds to play. Senior guard Kim Hess scored 24 points as the Dogs got their first win 74-51 at Kimball last week. In overtime, Sauk outscored the Dogs 11-4, making seven of eight free throws. For the game, Sauk made 21 of 27 free throws (78 percent) while the Dogs shot (46 percent) from the free-throw line, making only 13 of 28 free throws. "The girls worked hard," said coach Jackie Parsley. "Free throw shooting hurt us. We missed critical shots down the stretch. We ran out of gas in overtime." The Dogs took a 13-10 in the first quarter, but Sauk scored 22 points in the second quarter to take a 32-26 lead at the half. Sauk still led 44-38 entering the fourth quarter. Senior Brittany Lieser scored all four points for the Dogs in overtime. She led the team with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Junior Lynn Lieser added 15 points, and senior Kendra Johnson also scored in double figures with 13 points. This week, the Dogs hosted Morris on Tuesday. They will host St. Cloud Cathedral on Thursday, and they will host LPGE next week on Tuesday, Dec. 9.
