Power plays lift Cathedral past Stars | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
St. Cloud Cathedral scored five power-play goals to beat the River Lakes Stars boys' hockey team 6-3 on Saturday night at the River Lakes Arena in Richmond. After a scoreless first period, Cathedral scored three times in a six-minute span midway thru the second period. After breaking into the scoring column with their only even-strength goal, the Crusaders got their first two power-play goals in this stretch. The first was scored with six seconds left on their power play, and the second was scored seven seconds into a power play. Freshman forward Adam Porwoll got the Stars on the board in the last minute of the second period, breaking into the Cathedral zone and roofing a wrist shot from the right circle. Cathedral answered with another power-play goal in the first minute of the third period. They added a fourth power-play goal four minutes later to take a 5-1 lead. Senior goalie Brian Skluzacek makes one of his 42 saves for the River Lakes Stars in their 6-3 loss to Cathedral on Saturday night as junior forward Luke Campbell (6) and junior defenseman Blake Williamson (3) watch. Junior center Alex Naujokas scored less than a minute later for the Stars to cut the deficit to 5-2. Then, with just under eight minutes to go, senior forward Luke Harren scored on a power play, getting the Stars back within two at 5-3. Cathedral scored their fifth power-play goal with just over five minutes to play. The Stars had a nearly four-minute power play, including 30 seconds with a two-man advantage later in the period but could not score, losing 6-3. Senior goalie Brian Skluzacek made 42 saves for the Stars, who were outshot 48-22. This week, the Stars (1-2) played at St. Cloud Apollo on Tuesday. They will host Holy Family Catholic on Saturday at the Koronis Civic Arena in Paynesville, and they will play at Benson/Morris on Tuesday, Dec. 13.

Senior defenseman Zach Johnson and junior forward Josh Engquist scored twice for the Stars, and senior forward Kurt Peterson also scored for River Lakes. Junior defenseman Zach Dingmann, junior forward Max Lahr, and junior defenseman Blake Williamson had assists for the Stars.
Stars 4, Prairie Centre 3 (OT)
Prairie Centre (Sauk Centre and LPGE) took a 3-1 lead during the first period, but the Stars tied the game with two goals in the third period. First, senior forward Luke Harren scored just 22 seconds into the final period to cut the Stars' deficit to one, and then freshman forward Adam Porwoll scored to tie the game with just over five minutes left in regulation. Naujokas completed the come-back victory two minutes into the five-minute overtime period. Senior defenseman Zach Johnson scored the Stars' first goal, 13 minutes into the opening period. Prairie Centre took a 2-0 lead with two goals in less than a minute span five minutes into the game, and they scored a power-play goal with two minutes to play in the first period to retake a two-goal lead at 3-1. The Stars outshot Prairie Centre 35-24.
