Grapplers take Foley title |
The Bulldog wrestling team, ranked third in the state in Class AA, opened its season with three wins on Saturday to claim the title at the Foley Tournament. The Bulldogs beat Becker (34-27) and Grand Rapids (40-24) in preliminary pool matches and then defeated the host Falcons ( 30-26) in the final. The title was the Bulldogs second at Foley in three years. The Dogs won the title in 1999, took second to Foley last year, and now reclaimed the title in 2001. In the final, Foley, who is rated #14 in Class AA, won the first three matches and held leads of 12-0 and 20-12. Junior Adam Christian won a 7-5 decision at 125 for the Bulldogs' first points, senior Jeremy Sogge pinned his opponent at 130, and senior Jeremy Fuchs won 3-2 at 140. Trailing 20-12, the Bulldogs won four straight matches from 152 to 189 to claim the match and the title. Senior Josh Schreifels started the run with a pin at 152, junior Josh Kerzman won 7-3 at 160, junior Ryan Glenz won 8-1 at 171, and junior Marty Engen clinched the victory with a pin at 189. Against Becker, Paynesville got late pins from Schreifels at 152 and Engen at 189 and an overtime decision by Glenz at 171 to secure the victory. The Bulldogs led 19-15 when Schreifels got his pin, but Becker answered with a pin at 160 to cut the lead to four again. Leading 25-21, the Dogs got three points from Glenz (who was able to keep his opponent from escaping in the second overtime period) and six points from Engen on a first-period pin to clinch the match. Paynesville won only seven of 13 matches against Becker, but had four pins and a major decision. The Dogs' other pins and its major decision came from 119 to 130, as junior Pat Noonan got a pin at 119, Sogge got a major against a state-rated opponent at 125, and Christian got a pin at 130. Eighth grader John Hemingson started the match with a 12-11 decision at 103, his first varsity victory. Against Grand Rapids, the Bulldogs jumped to leads of 22-0 and 34-11 before winning 40-24. Hemingson started with a major decision, and then the Dogs rattled off three straight pins: from eighth grader Sean Glenz at 112, Noonan at 119, and Sogge at 125. After Grand Rapids cut the lead to 22-11, Fuchs got a pin at 140 and sophomore Matt Kerzman and Schreifels added decisions. Engen finished the scoring again with a pin at 189. For the day, Sogge, Schreifels, and Engen finished unbeaten in three matches. Engen recorded three pins, and Sogge and Schreifels added two pins apiece. For the junior varsity, an individual tournament was held. Paynesville had four individual champions: Jack Mueller at 119, Pat Utsch at 171, Nick Fuchs at 189, and Derek Burris at 215. The Bulldogs hosted Long Prairie-Grey Eagle and Albany on Tuesday in their first conference matches. The team does not wrestle again competitively until Saturday, Dec. 15, at Minneapolis Edison.
