Stars drop opener, 5-1 | ||||||||||
The River Lakes Stars boys' hockey team lost its opener to Sartell/Sauk Rapids on Thursday, 5-1. Sartell/Sauk Rapids built a 4-0 lead with two goals in the first, a goal in the second, and another in the third before the Stars got on the scoreboard. Nick Plumhoff scored an unassisted goal for the Stars in the third period. Sartell/Sauk Rapids added another goal in the third period to make the final 5-1. "The score should have been closer," said Stars' head coach Kevin Mooney, "but they clearly outplayed us." The Stars were outshot 29-13. Sophomore goalie Blake Theisen made 24 saves for the Stars. The Stars should have a couple chances for their first victory this week, according to Mooney. River Lakes played Becker/Big Lake at Elk River on Tuesday and play at Delano at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. The Stars will play their first home game on Tuesday, Dec. 11, when they host Sleepy Eye at the Koronis Civic Arena in Paynesville. That game will start at 7 p.m.
First Period: S/SR-Noah Kelm; S/SR-Sean Bryant (Kelm, Brian Bruss);
