Stars finish second at Duluth East tourney | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The River Lakes Stars girls' hockey team split two games over the weekend at the Duluth East tourney, taking second place. The Stars (2-4-1) beat Bloomington Kennedy 7-4 on Friday in their semifinal but lost to host Duluth East 6-1 on Saturday in the final. The Stars scored three goals in the second period against Kennedy on Friday night, taking a 4-1 lead. After skating to a 1-1 tie in the first period, senior Amber Schulzeten-berge scored a half minute into the second period to give the Stars their first lead. They would keep it for the rest of the game. Senior defenseman Marie Omann had two assists in the Stars' 5-3 loss to Tech last week and a goal and an assist at the Duluth East tourney over the weekend. Senior Allie Stalboerger and sophomore Kenzie Novak also scored for the Stars in the second period against Kennedy. In the third, Kennedy scored first to get within two, but sophomore Greta Omann answered for the Stars seconds later. Kennedy then scored two straight goals, creeping within one goal at 5-4, but the Stars scored two goals to seal the win. First, senior Marie Omann scored and then sophomore Abbie Rhoda scored her second goal of the game to make the final 7-4. Kennedy scored the first goal of the game, but Rhoda had answered for the Stars in the first period. Against Duluth East in the final, the Greyhounds built a 5-0 lead with two goals in the first period and three in the second. Novak scored for the Stars less than a minute into the third period on a power play, but the Greyhounds added another goal later in the period to make the final score 6-1. Junior goalie Kacey Nyberg made 31 saves for the Stars against Duluth East, as the Stars were outshot 37-16. This week, the Stars hosted Little Falls on Tuesday in Richmond. On Friday, the Stars will host Bemidi at the Koronis Civic Arena in Paynes-ville. Next week, on Tuesday, Dec. 6, they will host St. Cloud Apollo at the River Lakes Arena in Richmond.

St. Cloud Tech took a 1-0 lead midway through the first period and then added a goal two and a half minutes into the second period, making the score 2-0. Sophomore Kenzie Novak scored for the Stars four minutes into the period to cut the deficit to 2-1, but Tech answered with a goal 30 seconds later. Five minutes later, the Tigers added a fourth goal, and they scored their fifth goal in the last minute of the second period. Tech outshot the Stars 12-7 in the first period and 16-7 in the second. The Stars scored two goals in less than a minute midway through the third period to make the final 5-3. Novak scored her second goal, and senior Allie Stalboerger scored on a power play. Junior goalie Kacey Nyberg made 29 saves for the Stars.
