Stars score late to win hockey opener | ||||||||||
The River Lakes Stars girls' hockey team opened their 2003-04 season with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Brainerd on Thursday at the River Lakes Arena in Richmond. The Stars built a 2-0 lead over the first two periods, but Brainerd tied the score in the third, scoring two goals in the first six minutes. Eighth grade forward Abbie Rhoda scored the game-winning goal for River Lakes late in the third period, with assists to seniors Kayla Nepsund and Angie Schramel, who both play defense. Senior goalie Trish Wendlandt made 25 saves in the victory for River Lakes, who were outshot by Brainerd 27-22. Wendlandt outsaved her Brainerd counterpart 25-19. Senior Goalie Trish Wendlandt made 25 saves in the Stars victory. Sophomore forward Amber Schulzetenberge staked the Stars to a 2-0 lead, scoring a goal in both the first and second periods. Senior Bari Behling assisted on the first-period goal. The River Lakes Stars girls' hockey team - comprised by players from Albany, Paynesville, New London-Spicer, St. John's Prep, and Rocori - return 11 letterwinners this year. Last year, the team finished with a record of 9-13-3. The team includes three players from Paynesville this year, including Wendlandt, a returning letterwinner. Junior forward April Osendorf, who will play junior varsity as well as some varsity, also returns to the Stars.Behling, a senior forward, is playing hockey again after not playing last year. Head coach Kirby St. John returns for his second season with the Stars. He will be assisted this year by Stacy Emerson, Jeremy Curran, and Katie Tysdal. This week, the Stars played their second game against St. Cloud Tech on Tuesday. They will play in a tournament over the weekend in Duluth and will host Little Falls at the River Lakes Arena in Richmond on Tuesday, Dec. 2, at 7 p.m.
