Hess completes cross country season at U

hessJen Hess, a junior on the women's cross country team at the University of Minnesota, recently completed her fall season.

The Gophers finished fourth in the Midwest Regional at Peoria, Ill., on Saturday, Nov. 13, and did not get an at-large selection to the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championship (which was held in Terre Haute, Ind., on Monday, Nov. 22.)

The University of Missouri won the Midwest Regional with a score of 52, followed by the University of Illinois (93), Oklahoma State University (113), and the Gophers (128). In all, 26 teams competed in the Midwest Regional.

Hess was the fifth runner for the Gophers, finishing 33rd overall out of 170 total runners. She covered the six-kilometer course (3.7 miles) in 21:37.40.

Hess improved her finish at the Midwest Regional from 34th in 2002 and 54th in 2003.

On Halloween Day, the Gophers ran fourth at the Big Ten Meet in Iowa City, Iowa, with Hess finishing fourth for the Gophers in 38th place overall in 22:27. Michigan (45), Michi-gan State (85), and Illinois (85) beat the Gophers (133) at the Big Ten Championships.

Hess also competes in indoor and outdoor track for the University of Minnesota. Last year she posted the track team's top times in the 1,500-meter run (4:38.1), in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:58.79), and in the 3,000-meter run (10:03.55).

Hess, the daughter of Barb and Dave Hess of Paynesville, is a junior nursing major at the University of Minnesota.
