Shakopee rallies to beat Stars in opener 4-2 |
Shakopee rallied with three third-period goals and beat the River Lakes Stars girls' hockey team in their season opener on Friday. The visiting Stars took a 2-1 lead into the third period, but Shakopee scored three unanswered goals in the period to win 4-2. Senior forward Allie Stalboerger scored five minutes into the game on a power play to give River Lakes a 1-0 lead. Shakopee tied the score at 1-1 two minutes into the second period, but eight grader Jenn Paul scored on another power play, assisted by Stalboerger, to give the Stars a 2-1 lead, which they held for the rest of the period. Shakopee tied the game at 2-2 four minutes into the final period and scored the go-ahead goal a minute later, taking their first lead at 3-2. Shakopee added a goal with seven minutes to play to make the final scored 4-2. The Stars dropped their first game despite outshooting Shakopee 40-27. The Stars (now 0-1) are comprised by players from Albany, New London-Spicer, Paynesville, and Rocori. Paul is the only Paynesville player on the varsity this year, though senior Sheena Hoekstra, junior Kaila Hartmann, sophomore Tarin Beireis, and ninth grader Kelsey Miller, all of Paynesville, play on the junior varsity. The Stars, who were 10-15 last year, are again coached by Kirby St. John, assisted by Jeremy Curran. This week, the Stars played their first home game against Benson/ Morris on Tuesday in Paynesville at the Koronis Civic Arena. On Thursday, the Stars will host Brainerd at the River Lakes Arena in Richmond. On Saturday, the Stars will host Buffalo in Paynesville. And, next week, on Tuesday, the Stars will travel to St. Cloud Tech for their first conference game in the Central Lakes Conference.
