River Lake Stars start season |
Hockey practice has begun for the River Lakes Stars' girls' hockey team. The girls started practice on Monday, Oct. 29, and played their first game on Tuesday, Nov. 13. The team is composed of players from Rocori, Paynesville, St. John's Prep, Albany, and New London-Spicer school districts. This winter, seven girls from Paynesville Area High School are on the team. Returning players are: senior Laurie Barten, senior Jenny Habben, junior Jessica Andrie, junior Crystal Songetay, and sophomore Trisha Wendlandt. New to the team are sophomore Barry Bailman and ninth grader April Osendorf. The team has twice as many players this year, which will allow them to field a junior varsity team. This will allow younger players more game experience to develop their skills. The team has 29 players this year, with 14 returning to the team and 15 being first-year players. "We have a lot of potential this year on both teams and I expect a lot from the girls," said Tom Petroski, a middle school teacher at Rocori, who will be in his third year as the head coach for the Stars. Jim Caron will be the Stars' assistant coach again. The Stars will play four home games this winter at the Koronis Civic Arena in Paynesville Township. The rest of their home games will be held at the River Lakes Arena in Richmond. The Stars play at Richmond against Brainerd on Thursday and at Willmar on Tuesday, Nov. 20. Both games start at 7:30 p.m.
