Volleyball team third in Kimball tourney

The varsity volleyball team had a long week, with two games during the week and a Saturday tournament. Last Tuesday, Sept. 24, the team lost to St. Cloud Cathedral in four games. On Thursday, Sept. 26, the girls lost to Albany. On Saturday, Sept. 28, they placed third in a four-team tournament.

Tuesday nightís game was a tough loss for the Bulldogs. They lost the first game 15-8, and won the second game 15-13. In the third game the Bulldogs kept the lead for the majority of the game, but lost it 15-11. The girls needed a win in the fourth to stay alive, but lost 15-8.

Stephanie Tangen was the leading hitter for the Bulldogs with 18 hits and nine kills. Michelle Glenz, Tanya Lieser, Krista Fuchs and Sheri Lieser combined for twelve ace hits. Fuchs and Glenz also had two ace blocks each.

On Thursday night the Bulldogs started out strong in the first game, but lack of communication and too many mistakes caused the team to lose in three. Scores were 15-8, 15-2, and 15-6.

Hitting just wasnít there, with a total of only five kills and four ace blocks for all three games.

Early Saturday morning the Bulldogs traveled to Kimball for a tournament. Teams participating in the tournament were Kimball, Eden Valley-Watkins and Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City. Wins were determined by two out of three games.

The Bulldogs started off the day against Kimball, losing the first game 15-2, and losing a close second game 17-15. Next they played ACGC and lost a close first game 15-13 and lost the second 15-12. In the last game of the day they defeated EV-W in two games, 15-9 and 15-12.

Highlights from the tournament include Glenz with 35 hits and 16 kills, Tanya Lieser with four ace blocks, Sheri Lieser serving 22-25 with four aces, Laura Mages serving 13-15 with three aces and Sarah Nelson serving 24-24 with one ace.

On Tuesday, Oct. 1, the Bulldogs play at Sauk Centre. On Thursday they play at home against Litchfield. Game time is 7:30 p.m. for both games. On Saturday the girls travel to Minnewaska for another tournament, which begins at 9:00 a.m.
