Keller wins subsection cross country title |
Ninth grader Linda Keller won her first varsity cross country meet, as the Dogs placed third as a team at subsections in Rockford on Tuesday, Oct. 18. Keller, in her first year in cross country, won her first meet, covering the 4,000-meter girls' course in Rockford in 16:08. Keller has six top-three finishes this year, seven top-five finishes, and has finished in the top ten in all eight of her races. She won the subsection race by 15 seconds. As a team, the Bulldogs girls' cross country team ran third behind Annandale and Litchfield. The top three teams were identical in the boys' and girls' standings: Annandale first, Litch second, and Paynesville third. In the girls' race, Annandale scored 58 to win, followed by Litch with 86, and Paynesville with 100. Eden Valley-Watkins/Kimball was fourth, trailing the Dogs by three points. Sophomore Kaitlyn Frenchick and junior Kacy Nehowig finished eighth and tenth respectively to give the Dogs' three runners in the top ten individually. All three qualified for sections as individuals - the top ten qualify - as well as with the team - the top four teams qualify. Seventh grader Katie Weidner (40th) and senior Sheena Hoekstra (43rd) completed the Dogs' team score. At sections, the top two teams and the top ten individuals will qualify for state. "We did not run as well as we can," said coach Darrel Carstens of the Dogs' subsection run, "but at least we have an opportunity on Thursday to make a challenge. It should be a great race." The Bulldogs will run in the Section 5A meet at Pierz on Thursday, Oct. 27, starting at 4 p.m.
