The Paynesville football team, behind a great defensive effort, beat St. Cloud Cathedral 20-7 Friday, Oct. 10 for Homecoming.
The defense registered six sacks against Cathedral which gives them 11 in the last two games.
The Bulldogs received the opening kickoff and as they did the previous week, proceeded to march 74 yards in 14 plays to open the scoring. Seth Elmhorst scored on a one-yard run followed by a J.T. Koehn extra point.
In the second quarter, David Hemmesch boomed a 60-yard punt which Cathedral fumbled and Ryan Glenz recovered for the Bulldogs at the St. Cloud 15-yard line. Four plays later, Elmhorst scored his second touchdown of the game on a two-yard run. Koehn kicked the extra point and the Bulldogs held a 14-0 lead.
The defense stopped Cathedral on their own 41-yard line on the following possession. Six plays later, the Bulldogs were in the end zone again as David ìFreight Trainî Hemmesch ran over a defender to score on a 10-yard run. The point after kick was no good so the Bulldogs went in at the half with a 20-0 lead.
The third quarter saw no scoring as the Bulldogs drove to the Cathedral 20, but failed to get a first down on a fourth and ten.
The fourth quarter had the Paynesville defense sacking the Cathedral quarterback five times led by Bret Aagesenís three sacks.
Cathedral finally got on the scoreboard with 4:29 left in the game on the clock, making it a 20-7 game.
The Bulldogs will play Long Prairie-Grey Eagle tonight (Oct. 15) at 7:30 p.m. in Paynesville to end the regular season action. The playoffs will start on Tuesday, Oct. 21.
