Boys take eighth at Becker meet

By Michael Jacobson

The Bulldogs boys' cross country team took eighth place at Becker last week, running on the same course as the section meet.

"This was a close, balanced race," said coach Darrel Carstens. "With a few changes in positioning we could have easily been sixth or better. We ran well with some personal bests but will need to step it up in the sub-section level."

Junior Matt Mehr led the Dogs by placing 12th overall. Senior Chad Wyffels was 22nd, and ninth grader Dugan Flanders was 27th.

Juniors Jason Wendroth and Chris Utsch completed Paynesville's team score by placing 45th and 46th.

Ninth grader Peder Thompson finished 66th, and junior Todd Thielen finished 71st.

"We are improving and have not approached our best," said Carstens. Paynesville's junior high boys won a trophy for first place out of the 13 schools. Paynesville results were eighth grader Josh Sturtz in fifth, seventh grader Nathan Friedrichs in seventh, seventh grader Jamison Wall in ninth, sixth grader Kohl Nehowig in tenth, eighth grader Brandon Soine in 17th, seventh grader Russell O'Fallon in 20th, and seventh grader Ezra Thompson in 35th.

"This is a very good young group coming up," said Carstens.

This week, the Bulldogs hosted the West Central Conference North meet on Tuesday at Koronis Hills. Next week, they will run in subsections at Annandale on Tuesday, Oct. 14, starting at 4:15 p.m.
