Bulldogs trail Cathedral again |
The weather was nearly perfect for running as the Paynesville boys' cross country team ran to a second-place finish on Thursday, Sept. 27, at the Koronis Hills Golf Course. Fifteen teams competed in the Bulldogs' only home meet. St.Cloud Cathedral took first with 46, followed by Paynesville in second with 65. State-rated New London-Spicer came in third with 118. Dan Pearson ran with LPGE's Will Enns during the early portions of Thursday's race at Koronis Hills. Pearson took second behind Enns. "Cathedral is rated third, we are fifth and we are closer than today's score," said coach Darrel Carstens of Paynesville's second straight finish behind Cathedral, the Bulldogs' top sectional rival. "We'll see them quite often and have our chances," added Carstens. Leading the Dogs was senior Dan Pearson, who ran one of his personal best times in his last home race. Pearson ran the course in 17 minutes and finished second place behind Will Enns of LPGE. Senior Jesse Rien came in seventh overall with a time of 17:47. Senior Scott Thompson, who missed part of the season with a knee injury, continued to improve as he works himself into shape. Thompson finished 16th with a time of 18:07. Junior Riley Flanders finished two seconds later in 17th. Junior Tom Flannigan, who is also recovering from a knee injury, ran the first half of the race very tough, but faded to 23rd. "Tom is a very good runner and I believe he can run even higher in that front pack," said former Paynesville runner Travis Flanders. Jamie Wendlandt and Freddie Stock pushed each other, finishing 34th and 35th with the same time. Coach Carstens summed up the day saying,"We had some nice improvements. I'm confident." The Bulldogs ran their last regular season meet in Becker on Monday. They will run in the West Central Conference North Meet at Albany on Tuesday, Oct. 9.
