Dogs finish eighth at home |
The Paynesville boys' cross country team placed eighth at their home meet on Thursday. The Bulldogs hosted 14 teams at the Koronis Invite, held at Koronis Hills Golf Club. Sartell, with the top two finishers, won the boys' team title with 41 points, edging St. Cloud Cathedral with 54. (The Sabres are in Class AA, while the Crusaders are ranked seventh in the state in Class A.) Bulldog cross country runners Chris Utsch, Jason Wendroth, Chad Wyffels, and Dugan Flanders sprint at the start of the boys' varsity race last Thursday at the Koronis Invite held at Koronis Hills Golf Course. Fourteen teams competed at the meet with nearly 80 varsity boys runners. Paynesville finished eighth with a total of 174. "Our times were fair with this tough of a course," said coach Darrel Carstens. "The meet was loaded with top area teams and Class AA schools." The Bulldogs were led by junior Matt Mehr, who finished 17th overall in 18:16. Senior captain Chad Wyffels was next for the Dogs in 24th in 18:32. Ninth grader Dugan Flanders was 14 seconds behind Wyffels in 32nd place. Juniors Jason Wendroth and Chris Utsch completed the Dogs' team score by finishing 49th and 52nd respectively. Junior Todd Thielen was 71st, and ninth grader Peder Thompson was 73rd. Paynesville's junior high boys were third out of 15 schools. Results were Josh Sturtz 13th, Nathan Friedrichs 17th, Kohl Nehowig 22nd, Jamison Wall 23rd, Brandon Soine 40th, Ezra Thompson 60th, and Russell O'Fallon 64th. This week, the Bulldogs ran at Becker on Tuesday. The Dogs may run here again for sections later in October. Next week, the Bulldogs will host the West Central Conference North meet on Tuesday, Oct. 7, at Koronis Hills Golf Course. This meet starts at 4:30 p.m.
