Girls disappointed with 14th place at Milaca |
The varsity girls' cross country team placed 14th, out of 45 teams in their class, at the Milaca Mega Meet on Saturday. The 45 teams in Class A included the top-rated teams in the state. According to the Paynesville coaches, they were expecting a higher finish from the girls at this meet but felt that the hard week of practices may have had an influence on their performances. With eight days off before the Milaca meet, the team usually uses this time for its most intense practices of the year. The Class A girls' race featured 212 runners. Staples-Motley won the girls' team title. St. Cloud Cathedral, a conference rival of the Dogs, was fifth, and three-time defending state champion New London-Spicer was sixth. Ninth grader Kacy Nehowig led the Dogs in 18th place in 16:08, followed by ninth grader Tanis Beireis in 38th in 16:39. Eighth grader Kaitlyn Frenchick was 58th in 17:21; eighth grader Melanie Koerner was 101st in 18:22; and seventh grader Rheanne Zimmerman was 114th in 18:48. Ninth grader Krista Wendroth was 131st in 19:27, and sophomore Sheena Hoekstra was 143rd in 19:55. "It was a beautiful day at the world's largest high school cross country meet," said coach Darrel Carstens. "We had some good performances and some not as good as we expected, but we have high goals for the rest of the season and have been training hard for the most important part of the year coming up in three to four weeks." The junior varsity girls' race included 313 runners. For the Dogs, sophomore Lindsey Wyffels was 196th in 20:44, and ninth grader Morgan Kern was 256th in 22:08. In the junior high girls' race, with 160 runners, eighth grader Tarin Beireis was 63rd, seventh grader Kelsey Miller was 85th, seventh grader Shanna Hoekstra was 105th, and eighth grader Allie Wendroth was 120th. This week, the Bulldogs will host their home meet at Koronis Hills Golf Club on Thursday. The schedule for the girls at that meet is: girls' junior high at 4:35 p.m.; girls' varsity at 5:40 p.m.; and girls' junior varsity at 5:50 p.m. The Dogs will also run at Becker on Tuesday, Sept. 30. This meet starts at 4:30 p.m.
