Dogs run 14th at world's largest cross country meet |
Out of 45 Class A schools at the Milaca Mega Meet on Saturday, the Paynesville boys' cross country team took 14th place. "Our boys ran very well today and definitely made some forward progress on the season," said coach Darrel Carstens, who noted that many of the teams that beat the Bulldogs were rated in state. Senior captain Chad Wyffels was the second runner for the Bulldogs at Milaca on Saturday, helping the Dogs take 14th out of 45 teams. With 252 runners from 45 schools in the Class A boys' race, balance put the Bulldogs in 14th place. Junior Matt Mehr was one of three Paynesville runners to place in the top 100, running 62nd in 18:30. Junior Chad Wyffels was 79th in 18:56, and ninth grader Dugan Flanders was 85th in 19:02. Juniors Jason Wendroth was 123rd in 19:49 and Chris Utsch was 132nd in 20:02 to complete the Dogs' team score. Junior Todd Thielen was 149th in 20:22, and ninth grader Peder Thompson was 176th in 21:12. Staples-Motley won the Class A boys' race. Paynesville, in 14th, edged New London-Spicer and beat conference rivals Albany and Sauk Centre. St. Cloud Cathedral, another conference rival, was fifth. Paynesville's seventh grade team was the top Class A school (out of 45 schools) and finished fourth out of over 90 schools in the seventh grade race. Kohl Nehowig led the team in 14th, followed by Nathan Friedrichs in 15th, Jamison Wall in 20th, Josh Sturtz in 33rd, Brandon Soine in 42nd, Russell O'Fallon in 48th, and Ezra Thompson in 63rd. "We were really pleased with the entire boys' team," said Carstens. This week, the Bulldogs will host a home meet at Koronis Hills Golf Course on Thursday. The meet starts at 4:30 p.m. with the junior high boys' race. The boys' varsity will start at 4:50 p.m., and the boys' junior varsity will start at 5:15 p.m. The boys will also run at Becker on Tuesday, Sept. 30. This meet starts at 4:30 p.m.
