Girls open season with ninth-place finish at Morris |
The Paynesville girls' cross country team finished ninth at their first meet of the fall at Morris on Monday, Aug. 30. The Bulldogs ran against several top teams in the state. Canby-Minneota-Lincoln, fifth in Class A last year, finished second, and Perham, eighth in Class A last year, finished fourth. Marshall, a Class AA team, won the 14-team meet. The Dogs were led by sophomore Kacy Nehowig, who finished fourth, earning a medal. So did ninth grader Kaitlyn Frenchick, who finished 14th individually. Nehowig, an All State runner the past two years, finished three seconds from third and 40 seconds behind Nikki Swenson of Lac Qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd, last year's Class A state champion, who won the girls' race at Morris. The Bulldogs ran ten runners in the varsity race, instead of the usual seven, in this first meet, but sophomore Tanis Beireis, an individual state qualifier last year, along with Nehowig, did not run. Ninth grader Melanie Koerner (55th), sophomore Sheena Hoekstra (65th), and ninth grader Tarin Beireis (66th) completed the Dogs' team score. This week, the Bulldogs will run at the BBE Invite on Thursday, Sept. 9, starting at 5 p.m. The meet is held at the golf course in Brooten.
