Harriers race seventh at first cross country meet |
The Bulldogs boys' cross country team finished seventh, out of 15 teams, at their first meet at Morris on Monday, Aug. 29. Ninth grader Jonathan Kerzman - in his first varsity race - led the team by finishing 25th overall. He was followed by junior Dugan Flanders, who was nine seconds and three places behind. Junior Peder Thompson was third for the Dogs in 43rd, junior Elliott Wall was fourth for the Dogs in 46th, and ninth grader Nathan Friederichs completed the Dogs' team score in 67th. The Dogs, at 202, trailed Perham (53), LPGE (86), Marshall (93), Canby (175), New London-Spicer (183), and Sauk Centre (183). They defeated Lac Qui Parle Valley (209), Pelican Rapids (326), and six teams with incomplete scores (Brecken-ridge, MACCRAY, Minnewaska Area, Morris Area, Ortonville, and Wadena-Deer Creek). Because this meet allowed unlimited varsity entries, five other Dogs competed in the varsity race. They were: ninth grader Ezra Thompson (70th), ninth grader Josh Sturtz (80th), ninth grader Jamison Wall (81st), sophomore Chris Block (85th), and senior Mark Andrie (86th). "The varsity team ran quite well against tough competition," said head coach Darrel Carstens. "We have a lot of young runners, and we are really looking forward to progressing throughout the season." Eleven junior high boys ran for Paynesville in either the eighth grade or seventh grade race. Running in the eighth grade race were: Kohl Nehowig (10th), Donald Neu (16th), David Ruprecht (18th), and Mark Anderson (29th). Running in the seventh grade race were: Tanner Wendroth (third), Trevor Spanier (sixth), Zach Friederichs (13th), Mitchell Meed (18th), Brandon Blonigen (26th), Devon Koerner (30th), and Josh Liestman (33rd). This week, the Bulldogs ran at Rockford on Tuesday. They will run at the BBE Invite on the golf course in Brooten on Thursday, starting at 5 p.m.
