Dogs top Westonka in their football opener | ||||||||||||
The Paynesville Bulldogs opened their 2006 season with a 15-0 shutout victory at Mound Westonka on Friday night. The Dogs matched their victory total from last year with a win in their first game of 2006. Playing at Mound Westonka, a 4A school, the game did not start until 10 p.m. due to a lack of referees, which sent the Dogs, who were ready on the field, back to the lockerroom. The Dogs struck first on junior Brett Savelkoul's 39-yard scamper to the end zone in the first quarter. The Dogs' drive had stalled at midfield, but on fourth and four the Dogs induced a Mound Westonka player to jump offsides with a long count in the punt formation. Two plays later, Savelkoul ran into the end zone for a 7-0 lead. In the second quarter, the Dogs capped a long drive with junior quarterback Ted Hoffman scoring on a one-yard sneak for a 13-0 lead. The Dogs' defense, which limited Mound Westonka to 70 yards for the game, nearly blocked a punt while Mound Westonka was pinned back on their two-yard line in the fourth quarter. On their next series, Mound Westonka was pinned back again at their two-yard line on fourth down, and the Bulldogs scored their last two points on a safety when Mound snapped the ball through their punter's hands out of the end zone. The Bulldogs gave a great effort and scored a great win, said coach Ted Nett. This week, the Dogs (1-0) open their conference season in the West Central Conference South when they host Yellow Medicine East on Friday, Sept. 8, starting at 7 p.m.
