Bulldogs take fifth at first meet |
The Paynesville boys' cross country team took fifth place, out of 14 teams, in their first meet of the season at Morris on Tuesday, Aug. 27. State-ranked Marshall won the Morris Invitational, with four West Central Conference schools - Montevideo, Sauk Centre, New London-Spicer, and Paynesville - taking the next four spots. Marshall, ranked fifth in Class AA, won with a five-runner total of 41. Montevideo, ranked sixth in Class A, took second with 79, led by senior Greg Liebl, the medalist at the meet. Liebl was the 2000 state champ and the 2001 state runner-up in Class A. Marshall placed three runners in the top six. Senior Riley Flanders led the Bulldogs by placing seventh. Junior Chad Wyffels was next in 27th, and senior Freddie Stock took 32nd. The Bulldogs beat Canby/ Minneota/Lincoln, who are ranked eighth in state but took eighth place in the meet at the golf course in Morris. Ninth graders Jason Wendroth and Matt Mehr completed the Dogs' team score by placing 52nd and 55th respectively. Senior Tom Flannigan finished 57th for Paynesville, and ninth grader Chris Utsch was 68th. The Dogs run next at a meet hosted by BBE on the golf course in Brooten on Thursday, Sept. 5, starting at 5 p.m.
