Manawa, behind pitcher Bill Nolan, one of three pitchers on their staff who already has college experience, led 7-0, and a late rally by Paynesville was short.

Nolan threw six innings, allowing only one run, on Adam Kampsen's solo homer in the top of the sixth. Kampsen blasted a shot down the leftfield line to put Paynesville on the score board, but Manawa answered with a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth.

When Manawa went to their bullpen in the seventh, Paynesville scored five runs. John Hemingson was hit by a pitch to start the inning, Bobby O'Fallon hit into a fielder's choice, and Ryan Hess and Chris Beier drew walks to load the bases.

With two outs, Chad Stang singled home one run, and Kampsen's bloop single scored two more. Justin Butkofski ended the scoring with a two-run double over the centerfielder's head, but he was stranded at second.

Still, after trailing 9-1 entering the final inning, Paynesville had managed to get the tying run to the on-deck circle, never giving up, said coach Brad Skoglund. "It's a tribute to the kids," he explained. "They don't give up. They battled and battled and battled."

Paynesville's defense let down starting pitcher Jamie Paul. He allowed seven runs in five innings but only three were earned, as Manawa capitalized on five errors by Paynesville.
