Lake Henry eliminated at regions | ||||||||||||||
The Lake Henry Lakers ended their season on Saturday with a 7-4 loss to Norway Lake-Sunburg in the Region 15C playoffs at Richmond. In an elimination game, Norway Lake-Sunburg scored five runs in their first four at bats to take an early 5-0 lead against Lake Henry. Lake HenryÊ- who had baserunners in every inning - finally got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning when Ryan Wuertz singled home Josh Kampsen with two outs. In the seventh, the Lakers had their best rally, scoring three runs and cutting the deficit to one at 5-4. Kampsen led off the inning with an infield single, and Jon Lieser was hit by a pitch to put two runners on with nobody out. Wuertz hit a deep drive to left that hit the glove of the NL-S leftfielder just as he hit the fence. It dropped for a hit, but a good relay allowed NL-S to throw out Lieser trying for third, a call that the Lakers protested. Jeff Schmitz followed Wuertz with a two-run homer to straightaway centerfield, bringing the Lakers within one run. But Lake Henry could get no closer. Norway Lake-Sunburg got four straight hits to start the seventh inning, scoring two insurance runs. Twice Lake Henry failed to cover a base on a bunt attempt, and the Lakers committed two throwing errors in the inning. Good defense helped the Lakers end the threat though. With the bases loaded, the Lakers forced out one runner at home and then turned a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning. Lake Henry had the tying runs reach base in both the eighth and ninth innings but could not score. Lake Henry - which went 1-2 at regions - ended their season with a record of 15-13. Norway Lake-Sunburg lost to Elrosa 4-0 on Sunday, and Elrosa then beat New London-Spicer for the Region 15C title. Both Elrosa and New London-Spicer qualified for the state tournament from Region 15C.
