Paynesville duo takes 65th |
Dave Heitke and John Liestman of Paynesville finished 65th out of 150 two-person teams at the Kenora Bass Invitational on the Lake of the Woods over the weekend. Heitke and Liestman, who finished third in 2003, led after the first day of fishing on Thursday, Aug. 5, catching 18.19 pounds of bass, including the biggest fish of the day, a 5.23-pound bass. But on Friday, Aug. 6, Heitke and Liestman had motor trouble and did not catch any fish. Despite being shutout on Friday, the duo caught 14.47 pounds of fish on Saturday, Aug. 7, to place 65th. Heitke and Liestman helped Team USA beat Team Canada at the tournament. Pitting the top five American finishers from 2003 against the top five Canadian finishers, Team USA won the 2004 challenge 179.47 pounds to 168.58 pounds. Heitke and Liestman were the captains of Team USA in 2004, since they were the highest American finishers in 2003. Heitke and Liestman won the Kenora Bass Invitational in 1999. They took second place in the tournament in 1994 and 1995.
