Paynesville's American Legion baseball team took third place at the Region 6, Division II tournament this weekend, hosted in Paynesville and Regal. Paynesville won three games before losing twice, finishing third in the region. Sebeka won four games, outscoring its opponents 33-3 to win the region title and advance to the state tournament. Sauk Centre finished second. Paynesville opened the tourney with a 3-0 victory over Pierz on Thursday as Chris Beier pitched a no-hitter. Beier allowed only two walks and a hit batter as he recorded a shutout. Chris Beier pitched a no-hitter as Paynesville's American Legion baeball team beat Pierz on Thursday at the regional tournament. Paynesville scored their first run on a wild pitch in the third. Mark Andrie hit a solo homer for their second run in the fifth, and Derek Stanger delivered an RBI single for their third run in the sixth. In the semifinals, though, Sebeka pounded 13 hits and beat Paynes-ville 9-1 on Thursday evening. In the consolation bracket on Friday, Paynesville beat Crosslake 13-4 and Pierz again 6-4. Against Crosslake, Paynesville scored nine runs in the first three innings. Stanger hit a two-run single in the first inning. Beier hit a three-run homer in the second inning, followed by Justin Butkofski with a back-to-back homer. And Andrie homered to lead off the third inning. Crosslake forfeited the game when their last pitcher was ejected. Pierz scored three runs in the sixth inning to tie the game 4-4, but Paynesville scored two runs in the seventh inning to win 6-4. In the seventh, Butkofski and Stanger singled and scored, while Trent Hansen and Andrie both doubled. On Saturday, Paynesville lost 5-2 to Sauk Centre, finishing third. Sauk scored four runs in the first inning and held on to win. Paynesville had the bases loaded in the sixth inning, bringing the go-ahead run to the plate, but scored only one run and lost 5-2. John Hemingson pitched well in relief for Paynesville, allowing only two hits and one run while striking out seven in five innings of pitching. Sebeka then beat Sauk Centre 5-1 for the region championship. Coach Brad Skoglund was impressed by the teams at the tourney and was pleased with how Paynesville played. "We really saw a lot of talented players. I was impressed by the caliber of play," he said. "Sebeka was far and away the best team," he added, with great pitching depth, good power, and lots of speed. Paynesville finished the Legion season with a record of 11-11. They would have liked to have gone farther, of course, said Skoglund, especially on the heels of last year's success, when they won a state title. But players really improved this summer, said Skoglund, which is the ultimate goal.
