Rangers, Pirates eliminated from playoffs | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Richmond 3, Roscoe 2 The Richmond Royals defeated the Roscoe Rangers 3-2 on Friday, July 26, in Cold Spring, won their playoff series 2-1, and eliminated the Rangers from the Stearns County League playoffs. Roscoe left 12 runners on base, including the bases loaded in the eighth inning and the tying run at second in the ninth inning. Richmond also left 10 runners on base. Richmond took a 3-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the second and two in the bottom of the fifth. Roscoe scored both of its runs in the top of the eighth inning. Richmond's Nate Guetter pitched a complete-game victory for the second time in the series. In 18 innings, he allowed only three runs. Roscoe lost two starters to injuries in the fifth inning, when catcher Mike Heinen hurt his thumb on a foul tip and Tony Orbeck hurt his elbow after being hit by a pitch. Todd Leyendecker had three hits for Roscoe, including a double and an RBI, and Brent Heinen pitched nearly four innings of shutout relief for the Rangers. Roscoe finished the year with a record of 10-12. Including the playoffs, they were 8-8 in the league, after starting 6-0. Richmond lost to Farming on Sunday, meaning the Flames advance to regionals in St. Martin this weekend as the top seed while the Royals advance as the runner-up.

NL-S 2, Paynesville 1 The loss in the Cornbelt League playoffs eliminated the Pirates and ended their season. The Twins loaded the bases in the eighth inning and then got a two-run single from Tony Salonek for the winning runs. The Pirates had taken a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning. Jason Schlecht pitched seven shutout innings for the Pirates before yielding a run in the eighth inning. Brad Deyak took the pitching loss in relief. New London-Spicer proceeded to beat Norway Lake-Sunburg on Sunday to earn the top seed out of the north division of the Cornbelt League for the regional playoffs.
