Legion baseball team ends regular season 6-7 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The Paynesville Legion baseball team beat Sauk Centre 8-2 on Thursday but lost a doubleheader to Ely on Friday to finish their regular season with a record of 6-7. Ryan Hess had a complete game on the pitching mound against Sauk Centre on Thursday and also led the team with three hits, including a pair of run-scoring doubles. Paynesville built a 5-0 lead against Sauk Centre and then added three runs in the top of the seventh after Sauk had scored two runs. Paynesville was swept by Ely in a doubleheader on Friday but both games were close. Paynesville lost 3-1 in ten innings in the first game, as Ely scored two runs in the top of the tenth to win, and Paynesville lost 7-4 in a six-inning game in the nightcap, as Ely scored four runs in the top of the sixth to rally and win. Derek Stanger, facing a college-bound pitcher for Ely in the first game, pitched very well, said coach Brad Skoglund. Mark Andrie led the team with two hits in the second game against Ely. Paynesville has been playing lots of young players in Legion games this year, and they have been playing good ball, said Skoglund. Next week, Paynesville will host the region tournament once again. The single-elimination, eight-team tournament will be held on Thursday, July 28, and Friday, July 29, at the high school field.
