Martins, Lakers, and Pirates win playoff games | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The St. Martin Martins - reinstated into the Stearns County League South playoffs by the state board on Saturday - defeated Roscoe on Sunday 6-1 in St. Martin. The Martins had been voted out of the league playoffs after winning the regular season title, going 9-4, for using an opposing player during an exhibition game. But the state board on Saturday overruled the league, noting that the Martins forfeited the exhibition game and played it as a scrimmage. Shannon Olmscheid was one of six Pirates to have a multihit game as Paynesville upset top-seeded Starbuck 13-8 on Sunday in the Cornbelt League playoffs. The Pirates are now one win from qualifying for regions. They will play at Norway Lake-Sunburg on Sunday. The Martins, the #1 seed, scored two unearned runs in the fourth inning to take a 2-0 lead (with Roscoe fielders twice colliding in the inning). The Martins added four runs on a solo homer by Jesse Thelen in the sixth inning, a two-run homer by Sam Rothstein in the seventh, and a solo homer by Jake Thelen in the eighth. Roscoe had ten hits but trailed 5-0 before scoring their lone run in the top of the eighth inning. With the win, the Martins take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three playoff series. Roscoe will host the second game on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
