Trio competes at Summer Games

Three athletes from Paynesville - Melissa Everson, Anna Liedman, and Michael Powers - competed at the Summer Games for Special Olympics Minnesota on June 23-25.

The competition included track and field events and gymnastics. Seventy-six teams from all over the state competed in the three-day competition.

Athletes are divisioned by age, gender, and ability for the competition. Anna earned two fifth-place finishes for the 50-meter dash and the standing long jump. Michael earned a second-place silver medal for the 100-meter dash and a third-place bronze medal for the running long jump. Melissa won two first-place gold medals for the 100-meter dash and the standing long jump.

Special Olympics is an organization that provides year-round sports training and competition for people with disabilities. Paynesville has a school-based program with training and competition in: bowling, basketball, power lifting, and track and field.
