Road race attracts a variety of runners |
Runners from New York, Canada, and Missouri joined local runners in the sixth annual Town and Country Days 10K and 5K road race Saturday morning. More than 40 runners took part in the race, which started at Veteran's Memorial Park. The 10K race started at the Regional Park on the south shore of Lake Koronis and the 5K started near KingBee Camp. Jesse Rien and Travis Flanders crossed the finish line together at the end of their 10K run. The two finished the race with a time of 45:01, finishing 11th and 12th overall. Clayton Lang of Paynesville won the 10K with a time of 34:12 while Denise Pietig of Olivia was the first woman to cross the finish line with a time of 40:33. She broke Tina Fenske's record of 40:51. Winning the 5K race were Brian Ward of Mapleton with a time of 19:30 and Brooke Schmitz of Paynesville with a time of 22:16. Schmitz broke the old record of 23:53. A new feature of the road race was a "pump and run." Runners could cut time from their race by lifting their weight. The men were required to lift 100 percent of their weight as many times as possible while the women were only required to lift 60 percent of their weight.
